My kids spent the first couple of years of their lives in a small upstairs apartment that didn’t allow pets. They also didn’t allow for kids to be kids, but that is a complete other story. Trying to be good mommy when we moved into our new house a few months ago, I decided they needed a pet. I weighed the options and was dead set on getting them a dog. That all changed when I saw that first mouse! I went the very next day and we got a cat.
All was good for the first month or so. My mouse problem was gone! I was so happy! Then the house started to smell 🙁 My cat started peeing on our clothes! If you have a cat yourself you know how horrible that smell really is! I tried EVERYTHING to get the smell out of our laundry but nothing worked. Finally today I broke down and asked for advice after washing them for the 8th time. My grandmother in law told me what I needed to do and thankfully it worked! Here’s what you do when your cat decides to be a butt (and yes they do it out of spite lol).
1. Use your regular laundry detergent.
2. Add a cup of Baking Soda to the washer.
3. Add a cup of White Vinegar as well.
4. Wash your clothes on Hot (warm works too, that’s what I used)
5. If you are worried about your clothes shrinking, you might want to hang dry. I just through mine in the dryer.
That’s it! If I had know about this to begin with it would have saved me A LOT of trouble. Hopefully it will help someone else as well!
Let’s face it, laundry detergent can get extremely expensive! That’s why 2 years ago I started making my own! We are a family of four and I’ve only had to make this twice, yes you heard that right TWICE! In two YEARS! It has saved me a TON of money along to way and it cleans so well. Here’s how to make yours!
What You Need
1 (4lb 12oz) Box of Borax– You can find it in the detergent aisle
1 (3lb 7oz) Box of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda– Also found in the detergent aisle
1 (3lb) Tub of Oxiclean (Completely optional, but really helps get your clothes clean)
2 (14.1 oz) Bars of Zote Soap– You can also use Fels Naptha
1 (4lb) Box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda– Found in cooking aisle (you can also use 2 2lb boxes)
1 or 2 bottles of Purex Crystals– Makes it smell awesome! Also optional!
1. Grate the soap (finely) with a box grater
2. Mix all the ingredients in a large bucket
That’s it! The most time consuming part is grating the soap, but after that it’s easy peasy! You will only have to use 1-2 tablespoons per load! That’s why it lasts so long! If you decided to put the Purex Crystals in your detergent then you can also put your prepared detergent into the bottle the crystals came in and you can use the measurements in the lid when doing laundry! The middle line in the cap is exactly 2 tablespoons! Also, if you used the Purex Crystals then you won’t have to add fabric softener later! You can use this in both hot and cold water.
